Ingredients:
2 tbsp olive oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried basil (or 2 tbsp fresh basil, chopped)
½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for a spicy kick)
1 tsp sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
Instructions:
1. Sauté the aromatics:
In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
Add the chopped onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until soft and translucent.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
2. Add the tomatoes and seasonings:
Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir well.
Add salt, black pepper, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), and sugar.
Stir to combine all ingredients.
3. Simmer the sauce:
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
If the sauce becomes too thick, add a splash of water or broth.
4. Taste and adjust:
Adjust the seasoning as needed, adding more salt, pepper, or herbs to your liking.
5. Serve:
Use the marinara sauce immediately with pasta, pizza, or as a dipping sauce.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
