Ingredients:
1 lb (450g) ground beef
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
4 tablespoons butter
4 slices rye bread (or any bread you like)
4 slices Swiss cheese (or American cheese)
---
Instructions:
1. Caramelize the onions:
In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter.
Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring often, until golden and soft (about 15–20 minutes). Set aside.
2. Form the patties:
Divide the ground beef into 2 or 4 equal portions (depending on your bread size).
Shape into flat patties slightly larger than your bread.
Season both sides with salt and pepper.
3. Cook the patties:
In the same skillet, cook the beef patties over medium-high heat for about 3–4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Set aside.
4. Assemble the patty melts:
Take one slice of bread, add a slice of cheese, then a beef patty, some caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and top with a second slice of bread.
Repeat for remaining sandwiches.
5. Grill the sandwiches:
In the skillet, melt 1–2 tablespoons of butter.
Place the sandwiches in the skillet and press slightly. Cook on both sides until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese is melted (about 3–4 minutes per side).
Add more butter to the skillet as needed for the second side.
6. Serve hot with fries or a pickle!
