Indian Taco – Canadian Style ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฎ
If you love tacos and Indigenous cuisine, you're going to love this Indian Taco – Canadian Style! This dish features bannock (or frybread) instead of a regular tortilla, topped with delicious seasoned meat, fresh veggies, and cheese. It’s crispy, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying!
Ingredients:
๐ธ For the Bannock (Frybread):
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tbsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
¾ cup warm water
1 tbsp vegetable oil (plus more for frying)
๐ธ For the Topping:
1 lb ground bison (or beef) ๐ฅฉ
1 small onion, chopped ๐ง
2 cloves garlic, minced ๐ง
1 tsp salt ๐ง
½ tsp black pepper ๐ถ️
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp chili powder ๐ถ️
1 cup canned kidney beans (drained)
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese ๐ง
1 cup lettuce, shredded ๐ฅฌ
1 tomato, diced ๐
½ cup sour cream (optional)
Instructions:
1️⃣ Make the Bannock:
In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
Gradually add warm water and oil, mixing until a dough forms.
Knead for a minute, then let it rest for 10 minutes.
Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Flatten pieces of dough into discs and fry each until golden brown (about 2 minutes per side).
2️⃣ Cook the Meat:
In a pan, cook the ground bison/beef over medium heat. Add onions and garlic.
Season with salt, pepper, cumin, and chili powder. Stir in kidney beans and cook for 5 more minutes.
3️⃣ Assemble the Taco:
Place a piece of bannock on a plate.
Top with the seasoned meat and beans, then add lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and sour cream.
