Ingredients:
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F / 45°C)
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp white wine vinegar (optional, for flavor)
1 tbsp fresh rosemary or thyme (optional, for garnish)
Instructions:
1. Activate the yeast:
In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
2. Prepare the dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
Pour in the activated yeast mixture, olive oil, and white wine vinegar (if using).
Mix together until a dough forms.
3. Knead the dough:
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes, until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
4. First rise:
Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a damp cloth.
Let it rise for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
5. Shape the bread:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Punch the dough down gently to release air, then shape it into a round or oval loaf.
Place the shaped dough onto a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.
Optionally, sprinkle some fresh rosemary or thyme on top for extra flavor.
6. Second rise:
Let the dough rise for about 30 minutes while the oven heats up.
7. Bake the bread:
Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
8. Cool and serve:
Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
